Washington - Why does your computer run slower as it gets older? The main culprit is usually installed software. Typically, the longer you use a computer, the more software you install. And as you install software, more programs typically get loaded into memory. Another culprit is the number of fonts you install. In Windows, fonts are loaded each time you start your PC.

Washington - What's a directory? What's a folder? The answer: they are both the same thing. The words directory and folder are used synonymously to refer to a named section of a disk drive that contains data. In the early days of personal computing, people created "directories" to hold their files. Microsoft's Windows changed that term to "folder." The thinking was that the concept of file folder would be easier for people to remember and understand than "directory" was.

Washington - Windows includes the ability to uninstall programs as well as install them. But Windows' uninstall feature doesn't always work well. Stray files, folders, and registry entries are frequently left behind. The free Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com) improves upon Windows' basic installer in several ways. First, it more thoroughly removes applications. But it also frequently gives you options about which components of applications you'd like to uninstall.

Washington - In computing, the word "skin" refers to the overall look of a program. The term is generally used only for those programs that offer users the ability to change the look - including the colours and styling - by applying pre-set skin definitions. Skins can also be applied to many mobile phones. They allow people to personalise the look of their phone.

Washington - Solid state drives (SSD) are one of the hottest upgrades on the market, and with good reason. They are much faster than traditional hard drives. But there are other advantages as well. First, they never need to be defragmented, since files are not stored on SSDs in the same way they are on traditional drives. SSDs are also silent and they typically run cooler and use less electricity. The downside: they are still considerably more expensive than traditional hard drives.
