MAGIX PC Check & Tuning Free checks your computer for weaknesses by locating the causes of system-related problems and correcting errors automatically. "One way of maintaining your computer's speed without having to spend a lot of money is to install the free version of the successful utility software program MAGIX PC Check & Tuning," says MAGIX Vice President Product & Strategy Lars Janzik. "It automatically detects problems on your PC and takes the necessary steps to solve them. Ex-Croton software exec finds new career in fixing things

Posted: 26 Apr 2010 05:02 PM PDT

Michael Silfen used to put on a necktie and suit jacket every morning during a successful career marketing and selling computer software.

Not anymore, thanks to the Great Recession.

These days, he cinches up a pair of khaki work pants for a day's labor in the field of woodworking and household renovations. The change of clothing is part of a transition in the field of labor affecting millions, turning the newly unemployed toward fresh careers.

"I wore a jacket and tie, I wore the uniform. I rode the train every day, went to offices in Midtown, Wall Street, SoHo," said Silfen, 58, of Croton. "Then I got laid off, after selling software for 25 years. My company sort of imploded. Now I'm starting something new — what I call 'Chapter Two.' I saw an opportunity to do something I've always been interested in doing. I love doing the work, the kind of people I meet."

In Silfen's case, going from the world of white collars to work boots was eased by another forward-looking member of the baby boom generation, Rafael (Ralph) Iamiceli, another Croton resident. The two met during youth soccer games in town and became friends. Iamiceli, who does high-end cabinetry and wood-working, was looking to expand his Ossining-based business into new fields. Iamiceli welcomed the new approach to business and marketing that Silfen offered.

"He brings a lot of energy and good ideas. A way to expand the business," Iamiceli said, "I'm 55, but I'm not slowing down. Why stop now?"

Silfen set up a new company logo for Arlington Woodworking and a new website, part of an emphasis on a professional attitude.

As a former marketing man, Silfen has an eye for customers. He is also looking to specialize in renovations for the elderly, making it easier for seniors to stay in their own homes, or "aging in place," as it is called, instead of moving to a nursing home or assisted living.

"It's to provide ways for people to stay in their homes longer: adjustments to bathrooms, eliminating steps, putting in ramps, taking out things you can trip over," he said, "And it doesn't cost tens of thousands of dollars. You can make simple changes that cost hundreds of dollars, but make a huge difference."

As a younger man, Silfen was never much of a do-it-yourselfer.

But with the encouragement of his father-in-law and a steady accumulation of knowledge through the years, he has turned himself into a pretty fair handyman .

He recently re-shingled his entire Croton home, which was built in 1896, even though he said his wife Lucy was convinced the local fire department would have to work overtime coming to his rescue.

A career change can be disruptive and unsettling, but it doesn't have to be the end of professional achievement . Silfen says it's always good to look for something new, and experience counts in unexpected ways.

As he says, "I can bring the skill I have to bear in whole new ways."
