| Install only original software, dealers told Posted: 14 Apr 2010 06:24 PM PDT by Johnson Saai KUCHING: The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism yesterday warned computer dealers statewide to stop selling computers installed with pirated software. ![]() SEIZED NOTEBOOKS: Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Sarawak enforcement chief Mohd Rahim Ibrahim shows reporters the notebooks seized during the raid. Its director Wan Ahmad Uzir Wan Sulaiman said selling computers pre-installed with pirated software was not only highly unethical but also cheated consumers of a true computing experience which can only be delivered with genuine software. "By dealing in pirated software, computer dealers are putting their businesses at risk of being raided. What they should do is to conduct their businesses responsibly and ethically by educating customers to ask for only original software to be installed onto computers which they intend to purchase," he advised. Selling computers with pirated software contravenes the Copyright Act 1987 and those charged for committing such an offence are liable to a fine of between RM2,000 and RM20,000 for each infringing copy of software, or up to five years imprisonment, or both. Uzir said this when revealing the ministry's raid at a computer dealer's premises in Wisma Saberkas on Tuesday afternoon. During the 3.50pm raid, officers seized two notebooks worth about RM5,000, for further investigation. Suspected pirated copies of Microsoft Windows 7 Home Basic and Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007, estimated to be worth RM5,000, were also recovered and confiscated. Uzir said the raid was conducted after the ministry received a complaint from Microsoft Malaysia, the copyright owner of the software. This was the first case for this year but the ministry did not rule out that it could be just the tip of the iceberg and planned to conduct more raids in future.
