LARGO — Michael E. Dement didn't realize he was leaving a trail of electronic bread crumbs that would lead authorities straight to him when he stole a laptop computer from a vehicle last weekend, Largo police said.

Dement, of 8735 Doral Oaks Drive., No. 1617, Temple Terrace, was arrested Wednesday after police found the lifted laptop at the home of one of Dement's friends.

Dement, 25, was charged with three counts of auto burglary and was released on his own recognizance from Pinellas County Jail on Thursday.

According to an arrest report, Dement broke into two vehicles at 934 Bay Breeze Ter. in Largo on the morning of April 10.

Around 8 a.m., he entered a 1991 Ford and stole a Nikon camera, which he later pawned in Tampa.

Shortly thereafter, Dement broke into a 2004 Toyota and took a GPS system and an Apple MacBook laptop computer.

He pawned the GPS system at a shop in Largo and gave the computer to a friend to hold, an arrest report shows.

But the computer was equipped with tracking software that led police right to it, according to the arrest report.

The GPS was identified by serial number and was recovered.

Dement admitted burglarizing the vehicles, the arrest report shows.
